The HEMP Room

After a cup of chai in the cafe and maybe a joint from a local or a bit of live didge going off, the museum journey now heads back towards the entrance into the Hemp Room.

Most of the museum has been made under the influence of this plant and this room was the Nimbin H.E.M.P Embassy in early days before it found its own home across the road. End Prohibitions famous campaign for the local seat was run from here in 1994/5 we had a production line cutting out life size “Plantems” to put at every polling booth.

Helen and Elspeth painted for 4 days full time to get them finished in time. Early MardiGrass rallies were run from here and Bob Hopkins heavy hardwood carved embassy sign is still on the wall outside.

The Kog video plays on a TV in the corner.

The giant hemp tree is made from 100% cannabis fibre, no tear ability here. The word canvas comes from cannabis.

Helen has “work in progress” on the tree for a decade now. The book shelf inside the tree had some fine reading and collections of early hippy magazines. As they slowly disappeared wrapping up deals we took the mags home and made a hemp display behind wire netting.

That too has composted and a new history of this extraordinary plant is being painted. Giant cut out cannabis leaves hang from the ceiling with some of the plants uses explained. A collection of Elspeth’s life drawings are pasted on the high walls above a collage of cannabis law reform posters, media cuttings and info.

The showcase of cannabis products was recently smashed by a legal drug canister (beer bottle) and we can’t afford to replace the glass. Many windows in the museum, including the front entrance, are now boarded up, the glass bill over the top.

If you, traveling the serpent path, haven’t left the museum at the cafe exit into the rainbow lane herb market, and you don’t go out the hemp room door, you are now led back into the Bundjalung room and can either walk the circle path again, as many do, or head back out the front door, to be or not to be.

There are 11 doors, you must choose one. Not To Be leads into …. suffering, To Be leads into ….. the same ! Suffer and learn ! Understanding frees you! Standing under. What else are you going to do?

    Fight? Surrender?
